Betsy's Wedding

This time Field picks the troubled picture!

You heard that right! In this episode of Forgotten Cinema, Mike Field and Mike Butler are discussing the 1990 Alan Alda directed comedy Betsy's Wedding, starring Molly Ringwald, Joe Pesci, Madeline Kahn, Anthony LaPaglia, Catherine O'Hara, Ally Sheedy, and of course...Alan Alda in a film that Alan Alda had such a bad time making that he never directed again!

The Mikes break down why the film doesn't work, and it is incidentally the best part of the film...the characters. Every character is well written and fleshed out, with their own plot and character journey. The only problem with this is that there are about half a dozen characters going through their own plot within this two-hour feature that is seemingly supposed to center around Alda's character and his daughter's wedding. This creates an unfocused film where you never get enough of any character and plot points are rushed through, ignored, or wasted. That being said he film features some fantastic performances throughout and has some pretty great lines of dialogue and moments. Oh, and hey! Burt Young is in this film!

So grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you, and settle down for Forgotten Cinema

About the Podcast

Forgotten Cinema
A podcast about forgotten films that deserve a second chance
Welcome to Forgotten Cinema! Each episode, Mike Field and Mike Butler highlight a film that for a variety of reasons was forgotten by audiences. Whether it be because a more popular movie was released at the same time or the movie simply didn’t catch on with an audience in the its initial run. We’ll discuss what we love about the movie or perhaps don’t love about it and decide whether the movie is worth a revisit.
