Gladiator (1992)
In this week’s episode of Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes step into the ring for "Gladiator"!
No, not the Ridley Scott epic, but the 1992 underground boxing drama starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and James Marshall. While both Mike Field and Mike Butler agree it’s an enjoyable B-movie with solid performances, they can’t ignore the flaws: high school characters who look well past graduation, a clunky mix of teen drama and over-the-top fight scenes, and a storyline that doesn’t quite land. Still, there’s a lot of both 90's and B-movie "Rocky" charm, even if it never truly lands a knockout punch.
