The Last Starfighter

The Mikes have achieved the highest score at their local liquor store arcade game and have been recruited by aliens to save the universe! That's, right Forgotten Cinema is taking a look at the 1984 film, The Last Starfighter!

Listen in as Mike Butler and Mike Field discuss this cult classic and realize that it maybe doesn't hold up quite as well as a lot of 80s nostalgia would have you believe. From the terrible CG effects, which could have been decent practicals, a whiny protagonist whose every scene is about the same thing with nearly identical dialogue, to a wasted Earth plotline that was actually lengthened due to test audience opinion. There's a lot to be fixed with the The Last Starfighter, but also possibly a to be gained from a remake or a sequel. But, even with all of its flaws, there's still something about the wish-fulfillment aspect of The Last Starfighter that makes it worth a watch.

So, grab your Gunstar One, please notice the photon blasters to the left and right of you and take off with Forgotten Cinema!

About the Podcast

Forgotten Cinema
A podcast about forgotten films that deserve a second chance
Welcome to Forgotten Cinema! Each episode, Mike Field and Mike Butler highlight a film that for a variety of reasons was forgotten by audiences. Whether it be because a more popular movie was released at the same time or the movie simply didn’t catch on with an audience in the its initial run. We’ll discuss what we love about the movie or perhaps don’t love about it and decide whether the movie is worth a revisit.
